Iriwaba Means Come here

When I was in Korea for a while, I had time to go for walks in the Village of Uigongbo, Korea. It was a broken down village that didn’t seem to have any industry supporting itself.

I soon found out that the industry was prostitution. There were women of all ages waving at me and yelling “Iriwaba,”

Iriwaba means “Come here!” These women were all trying to entice you to come into their little parlor and have sex with them for a fee. I was such a naïve young man I didn’t respond for the first few trips there. Then one night when the guys decided I needed to get drunk and party, I ended up waking up from a stupor and saw an elderly lady on top of me buck naked, and I was too. She was having sex with me, and I didn’t even know it! As my eyes cleared, I saw that she was eating an apple like I was one of the people she would please while on a break!

I was told she was a “mommason” A mommason, is  a boss of the prostitutes, and I was delegated to have sex with the old pro who thought she needed an apple while she was performing her act on me.

I ask her the fee. She said one of the guys paid it and the going rate was a carton of cigarettes.  I said “What, a carton of cigarettes?” She said that one carton of cigarettes, which was worth $2.00, would get her family enough food for a week. The cartons were a hot commodity in the “Black Market.”  

So, for a $2.00 (over there in 1961) carton of cigarettes you could find pleasure.

I thought this could be fun to spend a couple of dollars and get laid. So, another time I went out into the village, and a mommason beckoned me to come into her shack. I thought she was the one providing the services, but she walked me into her bedroom and lying on the bed naked was a little girl that couldn’t have been more than twelve years old. She looked frightened, and didn’t want to look at me.

I knew then that this was probably her first time. I was ready to punch the mommason in the nose, and left quickly. 

Later I learned having so much sex in that village could be deadly. One of the soldiers, who bragged about being with a woman every night, caught some serious infection in his gentiles and eventually had to have them cut off to save his life. The vision cured me of any extra trips to the village for pleasure.

Now you are asking me, why on earth did you share this with me?

The experiences I had in Korea changed my life. Some of the experiences I am not proud of, but I learned so much on the thirteen months I was stationed there. This particular lesson I learned is that something may look enticing, and could give you pleasure, but it also could be something that is very serious and could lead to a “dead end.”

If you are now stationed in a foreign country, and have open access to pleasures you are having a hard time avoiding, think about this story. Think about the soldier who lost his chance to have any children, just because he thought what he was doing felt good.

We all want our pleasures in this world, but we need to carefully check to see if they can be harmful or even dangerous for us. We need to know if they are things that God will be OK with.

This chapter would be a great time to talk about thinking drugs and alcohol are a pleasure we can’t seem to stop, but I have separate chapters for each of those. There are so many, so called pleasures, we need to take measures to identify them and see how they may or may not fit into our world.  We can find many pleasures that are not harmful, and actually enrich our lives.

What Are They Thinking?

On one of my off days in Korea, I was invited to ride with a courier to the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone.)

I thought that would be very interesting so I accepted the invite. We had to go through several villages, and of course the people didn’t seem to like us. They were shouting things at us I probably didn’t want to hear.

We got to the DMZ. What a depressing place! It was a very small outpost with guards watching the North Koreans on the other side of the DMZ. They let me look through one of their binoculars, and I could see a North Korean soldier looking through his binoculars back at me. It was a very odd feeling. He was just another guy like me, but he would probably shoot me if he could.

There is still strife between the two countries. There is still the DMZ zone. There are soldiers still looking at each other with binoculars. Nothing much has changed, except the lives of those who had to serve in Korea.

They came home and then they had to try to cope in the private sector. They had/have to adjust, and survive. I feel for them, because I was there with them. I know the frustrations. I know the disappointment. I know the feeling that no one cares.

I can say that it is hard to block out the negative aspects of our military service. It is hard to change thoughts into a different world in the private sector. It took me a while to clear my mind and concentrate on the future. I had to realize that I needed to move on and start a new adventure. I needed to think about the next day of my life.

I never have regretted serving my country. I would do it again if I was able. I have learned that I just need to be thankful that I have another day on this earth, and should seek what I can do to better my live and those around me that I love.

Some of the soldiers, in the private sector, have some issues still lingering with them from their time in in the service. I understand this. I have had to re-group myself. The key is to do something about it. Don’t hide your feelings. Get the right help to get you back on track in life. Can’t we All Just Get Along?

During my time in Korea, we had reason to travel through Seoul, Korea for courier duties. What I saw as we traveled tore at my core of values, and caused me to spiral out of control at times in my battle with depression.

We had to drive very slowly through the city because parents were often throwing their children in front of the trucks so they could get compensation from the Military for the damages. I couldn’t grasp the desperation of a mother to let her child be killed just for money, but then I saw other signs that showed me why that may have been the only choice.

Another time we drove through Seoul, I saw this little old lady lying on the street begging for people to give her some food. No one was giving her anything. We came back through the same area a couple of hours later, and the woman was dead. Again, no one was paying any attention to her.

How could humanity allow this? Why didn’t the people help her, and why did the people need to sacrifice their own children to get food? 

The world today isn’t much different. In the Middle East I am sure there have been many times when you, as a soldier, saw horrific things happening to the innocent. You may have seen people killing for no apparent reason. People desperately seeking help from you, and there was not much you could do.

You may think God has disappeared during these times. Why would He allow such hardship and sorrow to go on?

God hasn’t disappeared.  As a matter of fact it hurts Him badly to see all the turmoil and death in this world. So, why allow it?

The reason is that God gave us choices. He lets us choose our paths. He allows good people to live, but He also allows bad people to live.

The proof is when we see people like, Hitler, Saddam Hussein, Pharaoh, and other dictator-type leaders to thrive.

He gives them choices. He doesn’t like what many of them do in their lives, but he doesn’t like many things we do in our own lives as well.

He even gave Jesus Christ choices. Jesus could have stopped all the pain and torture He was going through. He had the power to do that. His choice was to follow through with what He was sent down to the earth to do, and He went to the cross for you and me to complete His journey.

We have a hard time accepting some of the trials and storms that God allows us, and many other people, to face in this world, but the bottom line is that everything has a purpose. Everything is leading to a big climax, and that climax will free all of us who believe. I know, I read the last chapter ahead of time. It has a very happy ending.

IWILL

We can see how horrific it is in some places in the world. It doesn’t seem fair to allow such harm and destruction to go on. We can do something in our own back yards though. We don’t have to let these kinds of things happen around us in our neighborhoods, and cities.

As soldiers and veterans we know the meaning of freedom, so we should make sure all people are free of fear, intimidation, and harm. We need to speak up and tell the bully-type people that they are not acceptable in our area. If all of us unite we can make a point that will be understood very clearly.
